Florida Treasure Coast EducationComprised of some of the best schools in the state, the resulting educational system gives students access to even better schools, from early education through the postgraduate level, in both public and private systems. In St. Lucie County, the entire community has made student performance their priority for the 2004-2005 school year and the Superintendent of Schools, Michael Anion, is ready to lead. Sixty nine percent of St. Lucie County Schools maintained or increased their academic grade in 2003. As the State has raised the bar, administrators, teachers, students, parents and volunteers have worked diligently to meet the challenge. To ensure higher academic achievement, the schools have adopted new strategies in teaching the old basics. In Martin County, as an example, individual schools are focusing on reading, writing, and math. With student performance measured by the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test CAT, student scores in Martin County are the best on the Treasure Coast but administrators look toward an even higher level. Martin County has the second highest graduation rate in Florida and the lowest dropout rate. While both rates please administrators, they still see room for improvement. In St. Lucie County, the entire community has made public education a priority, according to school superintendent Bill Vogel. Appointed in 1997, he established a district advisory committee, built working relationships with government leaders and businesses, and saw improvements in student scores on Acts. In 2000, he was named superintendent of the year for the state by the Florida Association of District School Superintendents. Another county accolade went to Lincoln Park Academy, a top achieving high school in St.Lucie County, that was named to to the challenge index compiled by the Washington Post and Newsweek Magazine. In Indian River County, students posted their highest scores on the Acts in the last five years. The improvements were at all grade levels. In northern Palm Beach County, Jupiter High School, which takes pride in its high graduation rate, will be totally replaced by a new structure. In fact, three new Jupiter schools will be built: the high school, a new middle school and an elementary school in Abacoa. Among the schools on the Treasure Coast are excellent private schools for students from the age of preschool through grade 12. In Indian River County, Saint Edwards School, a well regarded private school in Vero Beach, operates a Lower School and a Middle and Upper School. The Middle School was added during the recently completed $18 million construction project. A performing arts center, an administration building, multipurpose building and a fine arts center, were also built? In Martin County, Saint Michael's Independent School has programs for students from preschool through eighth grades. To prepare students for the future in a world of technology, the school emphasizes the basics and supplements the academic program with an introduction to computers. All students work with computers beginning with an introduction in primary school and proceeding to computer labs at the middle school and beyond. Helping students prepare for the world of work as well as advanced education, Indian River Community College is a top performer among the state's 28 community colleges. The new Technology Development and Training Center in Stuart will prepare students through its Technology Education Division and provide businesses with the technological support they need. A joint construction project St. Lucie West between IRCC and Florida Atlantic University will enhance the region's reputation as an educational and scientific research center. Students can earn bachelor, graduate and doctoral degrees without leaving the county. | ||||||||||
